TYNEDALE MEDIA CENTRES
CLIENT: Northumberland County Council
VALUE: £4.5 million + £780K
Prudhoe High School: The new Creative & Media Centre is a world class Media Production facility for students aged 14–19 years and the wider community. The new building is located in the grounds of Prudhoe High School in Northumberland. The world class facilities include TV and Radio studios, live rooms, meeting & learning spaces, an ICT suite and presentation theatre. The building has a strong sustainable agenda, using renewable energy and sustainable building technology and construction.
Ridley Hall: The project consisted of the refurbishment of an existing carriage block within the Ridley Hall Estate into a satellite Media Production facility linked to that at Prudhoe. As such it contains media production and recording studios. The refurbishment involved new roofing, damp proofing and timber treatment works, along with the new internal remodelling and fit out. The opportunity was also taken to undertake alterations to provide better facilities for the disabled within the existing residential accommodation in Ridley Hall.
55 DEGREES NORTH / METRO RADIO,
NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE,
RE. ROOFING AND IMPROVEMENT WORKS.
CLIENT: Crown Dilmun
The fact that the head of the CDMC section of the company is also a fully qualified architect of many year experience bore massive dividends when appointed as part of the team to carry out major re roofing and maintenance works to Swan House. His suggestions as to how the initial proposed design and method of construction could be radically altered were adopted. This resulted in great savings to the project in time and cost, much simplified construction, drastic reductions in the potential risks to the site personnel and general public and all together was a far more sustainable solution.

It consisted of four community fire stations and a combined fire station and headquarters. The proposed buildings are community orientated reflecting the fire authorities’ focus on fire prevention and wider community safety.
A measure of the scheme’s success can be gained from the fact that it was the biggest winner in the national Partnership Bulletin Awards 2011 where it won the Best Accommodation category before going on to win the prestigious Projects Grand Prix award.

The camp at Harperley housed German and Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War.
It was featured in the BBC series Restoration and is of national importance since it is the only complete example of its kind left in the country.
It is however asbestos ridden and in a seriously delapidated condition. English Heritage have stepped in to try and save it for the nation and we were appointed to provide CDMC services for the project early in 2011. The first task is to prevent further deterioration to the 3 most significant buildings on the site ie. the theatre, canteen and dining huts by the installation of a large spanned tempory protective structure thereover. This delicate precise operation is presently in the design phase.

The practice has had a long standing association with English Heritage in an architectural capacity stretching back over 26 years. With the advent of the CDM Regulations this association was broadened to encompass the provision of CDM Services where the fact that we were also architects with great experience in the historic buildings and monuments section has proved to be invaluable.
On the CDM front, our first commission with English Heritage was at Belsay Hall for the conversion of the Stable Block into a visitor centre, shop and display facilities. This has been followed over the years by several further projects at Belsay, the last one of which was for the re roofing of the Pillar Hall, together with other commissions for English Heritage within the Northern region.

These works form part of the first phase regeneration works for the listed North Dock at Seaham Harbour and aim to bring economic life back to the Dock by creating conditions to support a working marina with a diverse range of activities.
The building, housing 12 workshop / office units with café facility, sits comfortably in a new hard landscaped external area.

The programme consisted of the delivery of the following 6 new schools for the City of Sunderland: Hylton Red House / Castle View Academy / Academy 360 / Pennywell / Biddick School Sports Collage / St Roberts of Newminster.
Napper Architects were appointed by the City of Sunderland as their CDMC Client Advisor and to provide full CDMC services from inception all the way through the procurement process to final delivery.
Complex phasing and programming issues, involving demolitions and the requirement to construct the new buildings whilst the existing schools remained operational were necessary, these were most successful in their implementation and the schools handed over to much acclaim.
NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY HALL,
REPLACEMENT STANDBY GENERATOR/UPS PROVISION.
